As weeks have passed since we lost our Sam, I have finally gotten round to writing a wee something to a brother, friend, son, cousin, nephew and all-round hero of today’s world. For all that knew Sam, took anything and everything on board without a hint or moan. For only being 14 years old – he dealt with his illness much better than we did. For all that didn’t know Sam, the many things he enjoyed in life were spending time with family that turned in to being very precious. He also enjoyed being with his pals and looking out for them. I found this out many of times when he didn’t know I had a half-day at college and came home to them all sitting in my room playing the PS4. What he enjoyed the most was playing football. He was certainly a better player than both his brothers, however, I never stopped mentioning that I had won two cups more than him. When Sam turned ill all the way back in October, we were all distraught – what was reassuring throughout all the tears Sam used to let out a sigh and say, “I’m alright god sake”. That was the thing about Sam, you knew exactly what he was thinking by his screwed-up face. When you were annoying him, he would let you know. The special bond he had with our family was just special. That is all I could really say about it, it was just special. We always used to say that Sam was definitely not a sharer. However, throughout this process I came to the conclusion that he was – he shared his self and his loving smile around. For me, that’s what he shared.
During Sam’s long period in the hospital it was probably the hardest thing we have had to power through. Hopefully this doesn’t come across as oddness but even during the time in hospital, I will treasure. I will treasure these moments because he was still our wee Sam. Watching films and playing Fifa all day is what we would do. What was also great was when his two cousins came Home from Australia to spend time with him – which he loved. It was hilarious when he managed to sneak Shaun, Ashleigh and Gerry all In the room at the same time even know he was in strict isolation. The hospital was some times a dark place but Sam made the most of it. Without any moaning he built up a very special relationship with the Nurses and Doctors. The nurses were not only the kindest people we’ve came across but ones we are very lucky to keep in contact with.
I could go on and on about Sam but I feel its only right to end this here. I Would like to say a special thanks to our friends and family who have been magnificent. Would also like to say thank you to my girlfriend Katie and her family who have also gave me great support. I would like to end it on a small note that I’ve carried with me.
