CHANGE THE RECORD: Ryan Phillips

Up and coming musician, Ryan Phillips is hoping to make the most of lockdown which includes plenty of writing. Gathering interest on social media with his popular live streams and covers, you may recognise him from The Snuts gig at The Paisley Spree Festival as he joined the West-Lothian quartet on stage. Here, Ryan takes me through his top five albums and why.

Album 1: Favourite Worst Nightmare - Arctic Monkeys

Best Monkeys album for me. I actually came quite late to the Arctic Monkeys party - couldn’t really get into them until i was about 16. I think it just sounds working class if that makes sense, and i love that. It gives you a sense of connection to the tunes. The sound they’ve achieved on that album is class. They’ve found a class balance between meaty guitar riffs and slower tunes like 505 and everything seems to fit together so well.

Album 2: Definitely Maybe - Oasis

If it wasn’t for this album i probably wouldn’t be playing music today. This was my first taste of proper music and everything else came from here in terms of my taste. Noel’s genius lyrics and the power in Liam’s vocals just create something so f*****g beautiful. Knowing that they sung “Tonight, i’m a rock ‘n’ roll star” in front of crowds of about 20 people is an inspiration in itself.

Album 3: Erratic Cinematic - Gerry Cinnamon

This might surprise a few as a lot of these lists tend to be older classics. But this is an unreal album for me. I just listen to the lyrics and think “that’s me” - that’s an excellent quality to have in your music in my eyes. This album has also done a lot for me in terms of my music. I was playing before I found Gerry but never really took it seriously - but this album basically showed me that anyone can do it, you don’t need to be born with a silver spoon to be successful is basically the way i seen it.

Album 4: St. Jude - Courteeners

I remember someone in the papers saying “I confidently predict that exactly no one will be listening to it in 10 years” or something along those lines. What a s****y prediction that was. I think it’s actually got bigger every year! The Re-Wired version solidified how good this album is. If you can strip a song back to the bare bones and it still sounds as great as those songs do, then they’re class tunes.

Album 5: Psychodrama - Dave

It’s so important to be diverse with your music taste in my opinion. You learn a lot more about music when you listen to different genres. Dave is an absolute go-to for me out with the guitar music umbrella and this album is incredible. I can’t really say i relate to the lyrics, but he tells some deep stories within his tunes and you end up proper gripped in them. Sometimes i feel rap music can be a bit repetitive but Dave doesn’t fall into that category for me. Every song tells a different story and keeps you on your toes. The layout is impressive on this album with the dialogue with the therapist and that - it’s really clever the way it plays out.
