REVIEW: Anthem for a doomed youth by Dictator

West-Lothian are yet again showing off their talent with newcomers, Dictator. The band are ready to release their first single and what a way to kick things off. ‘Anthem for a doomed youth’ is a tune you’ll be buzzing to hear on the 15th of November due to its clever instrument use and superb backing track.

The song starts with a bright and catchy sound which sets the tone for the rest of the track. The song almost sounds like a dance track as the backing track slowly fades into the lyrics. The tune really does come across brilliantly and provides an easy listen for the listeners, but one that will have you dancing.

The band have caught the Scottish music scene at a great time as it has seen loads of new music being brought out, but this could be the best out the bunch. The song will definitely catch a few eyes due to its unique style.

Dictator are also the support act to Luke La Volpe at the end of November. Being asked to support the artist shows how much the band has to offer as Luke La Volpe has certainly had an exciting year with playing at Edinburgh’s Summer Sessions alongside The Snuts, Mark Sharp & The Bicycle Thieves and of course Lewis Capaldi.

The tune does have a political aspect to it as you can tell by the title, however, the group have shot down the idea of being a political band.

They said: “We’d like to state that we are NOT a political band. Our next single is likely to be a heart-breaking ballad that we can all have a good cry to, but for now we have no problem using our music to voice our opinions.

“We have sat on the song for a while and never intended to be releasing it at this point. However, we were inspired to release the song at this time by both Greta Thunberg’s impassioned call to arms and the current global discourse, specifically Brexit, Extinction Rebellion and the Hong Kong protests. Although we encourage listeners to derive their own meaning from our lyrics.

“We’re not expecting to change the world from our music, we only hope we can inspire people to view the world from a different angle.”

The talent this country has to offer is simply outstanding and is getting harder to overlook day by day. It’s time to take our growing Scottish music scene to the next level and support our local up-coming bands. Dictator being one of many.
