REVIEW: The SLP by The SLP (the debut album from Kasabian's Serge Pizzorno)

Updated: Sep 11, 2019

Ex-Kasabian guitarist, Sergio Pizzorno, has released his debut solo album, ‘The S.L.P’ this week which shows a total change in direction from what was expected.

The album opens with a track called, ‘Meanwhile… In Genova’ which contains no lyrics but provides a great backing track that has that rustic Kasabian sound to it. However, throughout the album, it appears the artist is going down a different route.

Another track that displays a different side to ‘Serge’ is the second track on the album, called ‘Trance’, which has a backing rhythm that anyone would struggle not to like. Then the delicate voice of Pizzorno comes into it and provides the perfect melody with the backing track.

The album went down a treat with the public. Although it wasn’t the Kasabian record that some have been dreaming of since their last release in 2017, it has satisfied audiences. Many fans were comparing the different style the artist has adopted with The Gorillaz, the side project of Damon Albarn from Blur.

The songs that have gone down well the most on the album is, ‘Nobody Else’ and ‘Favourites’ which features London rapper, Little Simz. ‘Nobody Else’, gives off some Kasabian vibes, however, as the song progresses, you can notice exactly how Serge wants to change his tune - something he clearly didn’t feel he could do in Kasabian. The song that shows the real change in the artists direction is ‘Favourites’ with Little Simz. This track was enough to get anyone to stop dead and listen. The song takes on a complete hip hop vibe through its bassline. Little Simz provides the attitude to the tune with her strong lyrical performance. An unlikely collaboration, however, one that works brilliantly.

The album is rounded off with a track called, ‘Meanwhile… In the Silent’ which links in with the first track but is darker and adds more suspense. Again the song doesn’t contain many lyrics but has a stunning bassline which is then complimented with Pizzorno’s voice.

A different sound from what we’d usually hear from Kasabian’s brainbox, but one that has went down well with the loyal fans.
