Manchester greats, Happy Mondays stopped by in Glasgow to continue their stunning 2019 greatest hits tour. The band had played two Scottish dates before hand in Aberdeen and Dunfermline, However, playing the iconic O2 Academy was all the more special.
As the group took the stage, the venue erupted. Shaun Ryder, cool as you like along with his whacky mate Bez really stole the show. Rowetta who also sings in the band made the crowd delighted as they knew her role in some of the Monday’s material.
They kicked off the night with popular tune, ‘Kinky Afro’ which had everyone dancing. The gig was aimed at the older generation who lived through the incredible 90’s nostalgia. However, the crowd flew themselves about as if they were still young.
The setlist was exactly what the audience were looking for, classic after classic. The tunes that really got the crowd going were ‘Loose Fit’, ‘Hallelujah’, ’24 party people’ and of course ‘Step On’ which gave the show a real buzz from start to finish.
The best moment of the night was with the bands most popular song, ‘Step On’ where the crowd went mad at the long waited for lyric. As lead singer, Shaun Ryder said the famous quote, “You’re twisting my melon man”, the fans went crazy and it continued for the rest of the night.
Which was also noticed was the fantastic lighting and Lasor work which added to the atmosphere, the lasers gave the gig an almighty throwback to the 90s and that was exactly what they were hoping for.
The band ended the night on ‘Wrote for luck’ which features on two of their albums, ‘Step On’ and ‘Bummed’. This was a great way to end the show as it gave them one last time to hear Shaun Ryders voice that hasn’t changed since his young days. It also gave Bez one last time to go mad and get the crowd to follow him.
A great concert and one that showed the older generation are still as mad as they were back then.
